A faulty wrist pin is common which leads to catastrophic engine failure. Many times you may not even know the wrist pin was the cause when your bottom-end lets go. In a naturally aspirated configuration, whenever a motor has a bottom-end failure and the rod decides to throw itself out of the block, more times than often, its the rod bolt that stretched and failed or the wrist pin siezed and either scenario will cause the rod to let go.
